The Old Belfair Plantation has had decades of prestigious ownership focused on stewardship, wildlife management, timber management and family oriented recreational use and enjoyment. This 872 +/- deeded acres of mostly upland fields and timberland has several drains and two creeks that traverse the property. These areas or corridors are protected and maintained for aesthetics and vital habitat for the many game and non-game species of wildlife. The upland areas are used for timber management, strategically located game plots and farming. The main access road is 2.5 miles that loops through property. The loop road has many live oaks along it that traverses the property through managed timber, game fields and farmland. One of the owner’s friends has nick named the property “Wild Kingdom” for you never know what you will always see around the next corner.
The agricultural fields have been planted in perennial peanuts that are a huge source of high protein food for wildlife. We always see deer and turkey in these fields scattered around the property. The fields are laid out for the maximum amount of edge to enhance habitat for quail and turkey. At one time the property was laid out with strips of pines as a quail preserve.
Through the years, Belfair Plantation has taken a more income producing approach from forestry. The small irregular shaped harvest creates edge and diversity at the same time providing for potential cash flow from harvest. This has minimal negative effect on the wildlife population yet enhances the habitat. The turkey population is astonishing not to mention the benefits of this management to the deer population. Having the variation in habitat scattered throughout the property from hardwood bottoms to varying ages of pine timber, perennial peanuts, game fields, upland hardwoods and ponds, this tract is a wildlife and game manager’s paradise.
Belfair moved and renovated an old school house to the property made of heart pine boards. The layout of the lodge (5 Br & 5.5 Bath) is perfect for a gathering of friends and family and also sectioned for privacy. The kitchen ties into the dining area. The great room is perfect for sharing the day’s events by the fireplace. The great room has a very unique double fireplace. Above the great room is a bedroom with a full bath. The two wings connected to this area each have two bedrooms with a private full bath for each room. The lodge also has a wrap-around porch. A short distance from the lodge is a covered entertaining area “Fun House” that has kitchen, bath, water and power. The center of the structure is open and perfect for entertaining with a large fireplace. It has also been used as a gentleman’s deer stand when you just want to sit under the shelter and watch the deer and turkeys in the large game field. The field is surrounded by big woods and you never know when a monster buck will just step out. Across the branch are two equipment sheds. There is also water and power to the sheds, too. If you want to fish or sneak up on some ducks, there is a five acre pond by the lodge that is tucked away and very private.
We think this is a one of a kind property. Owners have literally put no pressure on the game. Belfair is only about 45 minutes from downtown Savannah. There is not another old historic Plantation like this one and this size available anywhere in the area. It could be yours.
